Dry Stone Masonry and Landscape Art
Flowing, organic, dynamic stone craft. Stones skillfully interwoven, each stone supporting the entire structure, each stone part of the flow. An astounding feat of structural engineering….accomplished with a poets grace, a dancers finesse. A patient negotiation. Each stone a presence unto itself, all flowing together in harmony, like a flock of birds, like a school of fish. One fan commented “…I could watch that stone sphere the same way one watches an aquarium. Captivating”.
The work of Devin Devine has often been compared to that of Andy Goldsworthy. Not fair. Andy does great work and has an admirable career–on one hand, the comparison is indeed a compliment. Then again, look a little bit closer. See how nicely devins stones are fit. Also, watch Andy Goldsworthys videos…..most of that stone work is put together by other hands, not those of Goldsworthy himself. Andy himself even states that he is not a mason, nor a waller himself and that he respects the fact that his workers have skill which he himself lacks. Furthermore….look at Andy Goldsworhtys dry stone eggs. pretty cool, huh? Now looks at Devin Devines spheres and vases. Andys–stacked level. Devins…a whole ‘nother level of cool.
This work never, ever defies gravity. According to Devin, “such a statement would be ridiculous, this work is all done in complete cooperation with gravity and other forces of nature.” And for the glory of nature as well. Devin continues, “I watch clouds. Fractaline, ever-changing forms. Wind-tossed leaves, coils of smoke uncurling….branches of a tree, movements of a group of birds, growth patterns of lichen, plants and animals…geological layers of earth-strata. Earth, wind, fire and water. I build my stuff according to the patterns that encounter in nature. The same patterns move through all of the elements”.
Some of this work is functional–patios, retaining walls, benches and other useful landscape features. Other works are purely art for art’s sake. In both cases, the workmanship is top-notch, the beauty and style are unmistakable and it’s usually, inspiring, playful stuff. It’s good to be alive–and possibilities are truly endless.

Stacked Stone Vase. A functional planting vessel, built from Pennsylvania Bluestone at Devin’s shop in the Poconos. Smaller pieces like this one, at only 2′ tall are built at the shop, “not-quite dry-stone” with discreet amounts of bonding agent added, to facilitate shipping–they can be delivered right to your location.
