This project in Skytop involved finding and selecting a good boulder for mounting the sculpture. The sculpture was created by another artist, my role here was to install a base in a manner both structurally stable and attractive,

I searched for the right stone. I looked all around nearby, but the best one I found was conveniently right on the side of the pathway near the installation site. About 9″ wide of visible stone–the perfect size, visually, for the space. But around 17″ wide on the part to be buried, providing stability.

Short video showing a bit of how I mount a small sculpture like this:

i attached fiberglass pegs to the base of the sculptures and drilling holes into the corresponding locations on the boulder. And I used epoxy–and anchoring cement too. If this had been one of my own pieces I may have been able to simply fit the pegs in snug, without using the anchoring cement. This method involves precise positioning of the pegs. Since someone else made the sculpture though, it was tricky getting the pegs set at any exact angle. That’s no problem though, as the anchoring cement method is something we’ve done many times.
