I built my first stacked stone vase in 2014. This was the realization of an idea that I had had burning in my mind for a couple years by that point. In the winter of 2012/2013 I had built my first dry stone sphere, a swirling ball of living energy. After that I wanted to continue with the concept and create a more complex form, while still using the flowing stone concept.
How These Vases Are Built
Reclaimed stone from patio projects make up a bulk of the material I used. Also: bits of reclaimed granite counter tops. Stones from excavation sites, I find a stone of a particular color and set it aside, waiting for the right project.
Dry stone techniques are employed. I can build these dry or mortared. Either way they are built to endure.
Functional Planters vs Pure Sculpture
I build them to contain plants, though sometimes they are built entirely as sculptural works.
I will bend stone and make it flow for me. Some of these stacked stone vases are purely sculptural or decorative.

I’ve been gathering seedlings, small trees that are growing in my yard, and in my customer’s yards–ones that won;t make it, will get lawn mowed or weed pulled or deer eaten. These seedling, I’ve been planting on flower pots, and when they get to be 3 or 5 years old–I gift them to friends, customers and family.
This one is a baby oak. For the most part, I’m interested in full sized trees….produce a bit of oxygen, sequester us some carbon…..and that’s not all they’re good for. But I also always wanted to do a bonsai.
Will post an update–in a year or three!
Will also try juniper, cedar and other more conventional bonsai types too: but I have so many Oaks this is what’s local and available.

Move Vases:
I have level-stacked vases available, too. 
For my day job, I build flagstone patios and dry stone walls. Then, when time allows, or when a client commissions a sculpture from me, I take the leftover fragments of stone from these masonry projects and I build vases, spheres and other sculptural forms with them.

Others are actual planters. These stacked stone vases have a hollow included and are intended to serve as functional planting vessels. Barrel shaped, urn shaped, vase shaped, all can be built to serve as planters, or they can be built solid, with no void in which to house a plant. 
My stacked stone sculptures, spheres and vases have been featured in garden design .com and other articles online, books as well as magazines. My works can be seen in Public at Stonehedge Gardens Tamaqua PA, Brookside Gardens Silver Spring MA, and Burgess Park, in Glenmoore PA.
