Newly completed project: integrated wall and flagstone walkway.

integration integrated flagstone walkway and wall

Small project, but I every project that I approach is an opportunity to do something different, something new. Possibly even something cool.

BEFORE and after hardscape

The stepping stone path and garden wall, before I did my work. My first decision here was to connect the two, rather than leaving the space between them.

I agreed to take on the job by email and phone, only seeing the job in person months after signing a contract. When I showed up I quickly began to have ideas but even then the project evolved naturally. By day 2 or 3 I decided to do the integration of wall and walkway.

Wall stone and flagstone integration

It’s an idea I’ve explored a few times before, having an inlay move from horizontal structure to vertical one. Going about it this way, actually carving the wall stone so it’s also a paving stone–is something I’ve had in mind for many years.

integration of wall and flagstone

In the foreground of this photo you can see my second attempt on this jobsite of the integration concept.

I knew I’d also want a third spot, with similar but different “little bits”. Then when I went to fit these two flagstones together, the gap between them created this seed pod-like shape.

Into this space I set some river stones of various colors, collected from nearby.

Some previous examples of the integration concept:

Similar, but different.
