Why my stone walls are built differently
I find the best available materials and build according to traditional dry stone wall standards.
That means:
- Double-faced walls (two stones thick)
- Through stones tying both faces together
- Proper weight, placement, and interlock
The result is a wall that is structurally sound and built to last. You can walk across the top of my walls and the stones stay put underfoot.

How flagstone patios should be built in order to function well and last
- Foundation of 6 to 8″ compacted 2a gravel. Concrete will crack, leading to major repairs in the future, which can cost more than the original installation.
- Tight joints, filled with stone screenings. Polymeric sand or mortar will crack, you’ll still get weeds, it will look bad. ALSO settling may occur underneath flagstones, in the gravel or sub soil. If and when this happens–the semi-loose joint material will settle down and fill such minor voids. A more fixd material such as polymeric sand will absolutely create a scenario where there are voids beneath the joint and/or beneath the flagstones. This causes problems. Sand meanwhile will wash-out in rain and will get undermined by ants.
