Be gentle.

The first masonry jobsite I was ever on, we were setting cobble stones for a fancy driveway. Well, I was carrying blocks, and bags of concrete.

A frog got into the space behind some cobble stones– right in the danger zone. The frog was about to get crushed. I was like, “hold up, there’s a frog!” The other guys shrugged and kept working. Or rather, they tried to.

But I jumped up in there.. Froggy getting crushed? Not on my watch. Boss told me in a gruff manner to “get out of there!”

I was like, sure, but just a moment. I got the frog to safety. There was no great economic cataclysm caused, no one missed their mortgage over it. More importantly, the frog didn’t get killed stupidly and for no reason.

Only took a moment.

That day, I was a thin long haired 19 year old, being mocked by rough callused men. They weren’t bad guys, just not very conscious. So what, crush a frog. So what?

They tried to act as if I was being unmanly, saving a frog. They were wrong. His hoppity hop is like the beat of my own heart. And the beat goes on, strong.

Our regular work area is in the Poconos, but having started out working in the suburbs of Philadelphia, about a third of our work is still on the Main Line area. And we will travel the country, or the world–for people who appreciate quality stone work.
