Landscape Special Features, Wayne and Ardmore PA

A customer of mine in Wayne Pennsylvania writes me telling me about how the birds love the bird bath that we made for her last year–but the deer and the fox do, too!  The only trouble is that in the morning when the birds go to visit their bath, they keep finding it empty. You can litterally see the bird reaction–they look at the empty bird bath, then they look at the camera, then back at the empty bowl.

The fox kept drinking all the bird bath water, leaving the birds high and dry!

So, something had to be done. My customer planted a beautiful and thriving native garden habitat, and filled the landscape with pollinator friendly native plants. Fine works in stone, too! These landscape features attracted all sorts of birds to nest in and visit and visit here. If you invite guests, you have to have a beverage for them.

And talk about perfect timing. I just so happened to be doing some stone work in nearby Ardmore. What’s more–I just so happened to have met this amazing piece of gray argilite, just the day before!

Making a stone bird bath isn’t just about carving a bowl into a stone–it’s also about finding the right stone. My eyes roam the landscape, surveying all I see, in search of the right stones, for utility and beauty. Often, here on Planet Gaia, the situation is serendipitous like that, where the multiple levels are both functional (utility) allowing us to have multiple water basins within one boulder and also visually interesting (beauty, and unique character).

so these bird baths were actually made to keep deer and a fox hydrated, and to keep them, away from the regular bird feeder. These then, should more properly be called wildlife water basins. Then again only time will tell which animals will end up watering from which basin.

UPDATE: the Doe has found the new bird bath
